These are just a few of my favorite things from chef Amy Jurist’s most recent underground dinner, My Hungry Valentine. Amy’s unique underground dinners pop up around town with diners receiving the low down on the location just days before the adventure begins. Deliciously exciting and endlessly intriguing we discovered that our dinner was to be served in style along side massive artworks suspended from the ceiling and gracing the walls of a downtown art gallery owned by Gemma Sonego and artist Robert Reynolds.

The enormous gallery windows were aglow as the indigo sky settled in around excited diners gathered to partake of the surprise multi-course meal. The atmosphere welcomed us to mingle with our fellow culinary adventurers and appreciate the art and artistry of the evening, while sipping Red Velvet Martinis and sampling elaborate passed appetizers.

Hundreds of hand cut, red paper butterflies resting on twisted branches arranged in sprays, soared above the tables fully dressed in crisp white linens. The striking centerpieces conceived and created by Jonathan Fong set the tone for the remaining courses served with perfect wine pairings to the convivial crowd seated in this nearly imaginary restaurant. Amy’s sense of adventure shimmers in these culinary pastures as she shepherds diners through a memorable evening of merrymaking and palate pleasing platings.
