STAR Cocktail Recipe

(The Cocktail Book.  A Sideboard Manual for Gentlemen. 1926.)
This was published during the U.S. Prohibition, by John Hamilton Ltd. in London.

(Note: the photo of the book links to Amazon for your convenience, where you can learn more about the original book, purchase a modern “reprint” in paperback. We do not recommend the Kindle version, based on the reviews.)

This Star Cocktail Recipe produces one of my favorite cocktails, well suited to the winter months. It is easy to make, and can be quickly adjusted should one want a larger serving. However, I like the traditional, original small sizes for cocktails. Your cocktail stays cold from start to finish, and it leaves you wanting more . . . which is usually better than wanting less at a holiday party!

1 oz Apple Brandy  (I use Laird’s Applejack.)
1 oz Sweet Vermouth (Less expensive brands will be OK, but Vya Vermouth is a top choice.)
3 dashes Orange Bitters (Fee Brothers)
1 tsp. simple syrup (You can easily make a small batch by dissolving equal parts water and sugar together. Store in the refrigerator.)

Shake all ingredients vigorously with ice, and strain into a 4 oz. cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist, and if you want to dabble in excess, an apple slice. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
