In this episode of Organize It! from Operation Organization, host Katrina Teeple tackles all those business cards that accumulate on your desk or in your briefcase or purse. Sometimes it seems like they multiply on their own when I’m away from my desk. Even though I use Card Munch with Linked In, I haven’t made the leap to a 100% digital contact management system. I like having the physical cards as a reminder to keep in touch. Katrina’s tip may be just what I need to help me bridge the gap between keeping cards forever (in the box of doom) and throwing them out as soon as they are in the database.

Business cards can be great for marketing, but they can also be a big source of clutter and frustration. Holding onto all these cards can feel like the “responsible” thing to do. But after awhile, it starts to feel overwhelming, and physical cards can start taking up valuable space. So here is a simple system you can try out at home or in the office to help you organize business cards efficiently. Use two little containers on your desk. When I go out, meet someone and get their business card, I bring it back to the office. It then goes into one container. The next step: select who you want to contact this week, and put those cards into the second container. Finally, contact the people you’ve selected, and input their information into your database. You then get to throw that business card away. It’s as simple as that to organize business cards!
