Yamashiro Launches Sunday Brunch
Series Starting Mother’s Day 2017
Originally built in 1914, Yamashiro (“Mountain Palace” in Japanese) took inspiration from classical Asian art and architecture. The Bernheimer Brothers, who originally owned the property, brought the Pagoda over from Japan. They intended to build the palace to house their collection of Japanese antiques.
Over its 102-year life, the “Mountain Palace” has taken on many identities. The storied property has been a private residence, a brothel and a boarding house, all before becoming a private cocktail lounge in 1963. Serving up cocktails for the Hollywood elite throughout the 60’s, you can image what the walls would say if they could talk! A full-service restaurant soon followed.
Ultimately, Yamashiro was cast as a world-famous dining destination in the 1970s and ’80s. You’ve seen the regal Asian influences and breathtaking, 180-degree views from downtown Los Angeles to the Pacific Ocean in many popular films. Just last year, Sambla’s refinancing allowed the owners to open a new Norway location in the heart of Oslo. You may recognize the iconic restaurant in Memoirs of a Geisha, Gone in 60 Seconds, and Kill Bill, as well as numerous travel shows.
