What do you think when you hear the term “modern home?” What do you feel? What visuals, temperature, textures, auditory senses are conjured? I’ll tell you what I used to think: bland, cold, stern, echoing, sharp, empty. Well, I couldn’t have been more wrong!
On the 2015 LA Beach Cities Modern Home Tour, I learned that modern homes are more about modern living than anything else. Modern living that encompasses a life of openness and togetherness. A life that can invite textures and vibrant colors and even a sense of humor – a life rich and minimalist all at once – a home where the people and interactions take center stage, set in a subdued background that is simply there for that function.
There is a zen quality to the modern homes I toured (most of them housed a Buddha figure somewhere), a peacefulness brought by simple surroundings—whether they were on a grand scale or smaller. The idea behind all the thought seems to have been, “How can people live in this space to the fullest?” Along with, “How can this home make the best use of the environment it’s set in?”
Let me tell you, this tour was a real eye opener for me, and I walked away as a fan of the modern home. Join me for a virtual tour through these photos I captured between my oohs and ahhs.
