Hiking, biking and even long walks with our dog are even more enjoyable when the air is cool and the breeze is brisk. We look forward to snow flurries, too. The minute we have snowfall in the local mountains we bundle up and head for the hills. Waterproof boots really help to keep the family outdoors longer when trails are muddy or slushy.
This year we took the opportunity to get out in the snow and chop down our own Christmas Tree. Getting together with friends to caravan into the local mountains got everyone’s blood pumping. With stunning views, clear skies and frozen streams we each found our own way to get some exercise and fresh air.
Just choosing a tree required a strenuous hike uphill with creek crossings, and log hopping. The thin trunked trees were easily felled with a little vigorous work from a sharp saw. The young among us (and the young at heart) tossed soft snow balls at each other, while Dad hauled the tree down the mountain side.
I don’t know what it is about snow, but our pup is always game for a romp in the fluffy white stuff. He always wants to be outside as it is, but even more so when the weather’s cold. I’m all for this, as the more time he spends outside, the less time I have to spend cleaning his hair up off the hard wood floors and furniture. That can be a thankless task if you don’t know the best way to tackle it. His love of the cold weather helps to get the rest of us outside and active even when temps are low. It’s easy to maintain our active lifestyle when there is so much beauty and fun right outside! We live by the Ronulph Fiennes quote:
