Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh! …A St. Patrick’s Day Blessing On You!

I am indeed a good bit Irish, my auburn hair passed down from my grandmother, Maggie Higgins. This is a guarantee that along with it’s promise of spring, March brings a pot filled with corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, and carrots, and a few loaves of Irish Soda Bread. This recipe isn’t a sweet bread. It’s very plain, hearty, and rustic, but a perfect partner to a hot Irish stew, corned beef, or with butter for breakfast in the morning. My favorite is straight out of the oven hot, with butter. It’s simple, honest, and easy to make!

And with that, I wish you all a “Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh!” (pronounced Ban-ick-tee na fay-lah pwad-rig or-iv) “A St. Patrick’s Day Blessing On You”!

Recipe:Irish Soda Bread 42

Makes 1 loaf

Preheat oven to 375*

In a large mixing bowl:

2 Cups of Flour

1 teaspoon of baking powder

1/2 teaspoon of baking soda

1/4 teaspoon of saltIrish Soda Bread 32

3 Tablespoons of butter

In a separate smaller bowl:

1 beaten egg

3/4 Cup of whole buttermilk

+ 1 beaten egg to brush on loaf

In the large mixing bowl, combine the flour and all dry ingredients. Cut in the butter with a hand held pastry mixer tool, the one you might use to make a pie crust. The mixture should be crumbly when you are finished.

In a small bowl, combine the buttermilk with the egg and whisk Irish Soda Bread 29with a fork. Add to the dry ingredients and mix

together until the dough is holding together and moist. I use a fork for this step. Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface. Shape dough into a round loaf and place on a greased cookie sheet. Cut a large X in the top of the loaf and brush with beaten egg.

Bake at 375* for about 30 – 35 minutes or until golden brown on top.

Slice and serve warm out of the oven with butter.

  1. My step-father was Irish – very Irish! His name was Timothy Phillip Patrick Condon Michael Pius Reilly. When I gave his eulogy I said his full name at three different points, and the last time I got everyone in the church to laugh and say it with me…but I have never made this bread before. I will do it in his honor this St. Patrick’s Day – thanks for sharing it, Lisa!
