We caught up with Keegan Allen (Pretty Little Liars, and a really nice guy) at the International Bird Rescue Facility in San Pedro, California to learn a little about how IBR saves injured and oiled birds and the role that Dawn dishwashing liquid plays. Andrew Harmon, Director of Marketing & Communications, International Bird Rescue and Dr. Shawn Johnson of the Marine Mammal Center addressed the assembled crowd of volunteers, IBR staff and members of the media, followed by a final exam for one lucky pelican and the release of several seabirds into the sweltering heat, on this unseasonably hot October day.

Who Knew Dawn's Roll In The International Bird Rescue's Work?

Who knew that Dawn is really, really, really what they use to clean oiled animals? Dating back to an accident spilling oil into the San Francisco Bay, back in the early 1970’s Dawn has proven to be the most effective and gentle way to help save sea life after environmental disasters like the Exxon Valdez or the BP crisis in the Gulf of Mexico. For decades, rescuers have called on Proctor & Gamble for donations of Dawn for use in the rehabilitation of oiled animals.

Thanks to everyone at International Bird Rescue and The Marine Mammal Center for all of the work you do to ensure the safety of our wild animal friends. Thanks to Dawn for supporting these efforts.

As an aside to locals, I have to mention the catering at this event. It was simple and elegant and the turkey sandwiches on fennel raisin buns were inspired. If you’re in Los Angeles, or Orange County, look up Kora Kroep! You’ll thank me for telling you about her.
